THE
FESTIVALS

The
main festivals of the island are: on the 27th of July, a festival on
the island Chiliomodi, to honor St. Panteleimon.
On
the 14h of August, is the day of the dormition of the Virgin
Mary. (The Assumption)
The
5th of August is celebrated at the
church
of
Christo
at the lower part of Kampos, on the way to Lambi. After the evening
celebration, there is a festival at the upper and lower part of Kampos.
On
the 15th
of August, the eve of the sleeping of the Virgin Mary.
On
the 15h of August, are other celebrations at Gerano. It is a tradition al evening of dancing, eating an d
singing. The chapel of Panagia Geranou, which is located at the summit
of the hill at Geranos, is one of the most ancient sights, and
the most beautiful
sceneries of
Patmos
.
Many tourist and locals visit the sight, especially during summer. The
archaeologists' opinion, which visited the area last year, is that at
that specific point there was a pre-Christian district with walls and
probably an old pagan temple. A Christian temple was built on its
ruins that collapsed and on top of those ruins; fishermen and
habitants built today’s church, from Consolato, an area of Skala.
The chapel was built 160 years ago, on top of an old building and it
has 2 small temples, (the sleeping of Theotokou and St. Juliani and a
common temple at front, which celebrates on the 15th of August. From
there, you have a bird's eye view of
Patmos
.
Chora with the Monastery and the surrounding islands such as,
Chiliomodi, Leros, Lipsi, Arki, Marathi
etc. With the provision of the
conservation and preservation committee of the chapel, consisted by
locals from Consolato, they organize one of the biggest festivals, on
the 15th of August, on
Patmos
every year. The service is held early in the afternoon and the church
and its precinct, is deluged of people. Visitors, locals, children,
youth, and elderly are present at Panagia Geranou. At the end of the
service the feast starts slowly and culminates with music from the
traditional band and dan cing
until sun rise…
On
the 14th
of August, eve of the Assumption the rotation of the epitaph of the
Virgin Panagia Diasozousa (Our Lady of Rescue) in Chora. The abbot of
the Monastery of Patmos and all the clerical leads the litany of the
procession. The procession
starts from the
church
of
Megali
Panagia
(The Great Virgin), it heads towards the
square
of
Agia
Levia
,
from there, to the
square
of
Emmanuel
Xanthos
and ends at the
church
of
Diasozousa
.
During the procession of the epitaph, the blessings sungs. On eve
night, there is a great vigil at the
church
of
Virgin
Diasozousa
.
On
the 15th
of August, the
church
of
Panagia
(Virgin Mary) at the square of upper Kampos celebrates, with a
festival that last all night, with folk dances and songs from the folk
band. On the same day, Virgin Mary
Exoskala
place is celelebrated on
Patmos
.
The
celebration of Agia Thekla.
Agia
Thekla celebrates on the 24th of September. The chapel of Agia Thekla
is located on the isle opposite of Agriolivadi the chapel is taken
care by the Gryllaki family. On Friday, chartering boats with
foreigners and locals arrive early, to enjoy the vespers sung by (Father)
Nicholas of Kampos, the blessed bread, and Greek coffee. In the
evening, the visitors relish for the wine, the food, and singing from
the band of Tsoumbos.
